Honestly, I thought I'd get a bigger rise out of that than I did.

It is frustrating, the still came over with BSPP threads on the steam fittings, we ended up having to brute force rethread those to NPT. Whole crew of plumbers standing around wondering what the hell.

  • I can understand the frustration. BSP and NPT are not actually compatible and you shouldn't mix parallel and taper threads. Although in some sizes the NPT and BSP thread forms are close to a match.

And as you said, if you do cut the threads into each other, then treat it as a permanent joint.

We cut the thread with a tap.

  • Give me BSPP any day. NPT .... nothing but a curse.

And hell YES, driving on the left is the only sane direction.

BSPP need sealing gaskets as straight threads are not pressure tight.

    Tapered threads do not.

Glomming a half mile of Teflon tape on a straight thread fitting isn't elegant.

  • Which is why God invented BSPT.
Just like there is NPT & NPS.

  • BSPP is used on things like elements and other situations where there is a sealing washer. BSPT is used for joining sections of pipe together.

Same as the equivalent NPTT and NPTP just a slightly different thread profile. :))

2nd batch mashed in a Franziskanner tribute. About to cube the first 4 corny's worth.

You're gunna love oats if you haven't played with em before Grim. Got that soapy sort of mouthfeel without the dishcloth that rye gives some people.

  • The whiskey is great, the oat hulls are something else.

  • Soggy mess? Did the mash need extra enzyme treatment? How much of the mash bill did the oats make up?

  • It turns into a frothy big pot of snot.

  • I had heard oats were a problem. I wonder why and what can be done to curtail it.
Is it a protein thing? Pepsin?

We did 100% unmalted - corn and oats.

All enzyme - BG, HTAA, GA.

Usually after fermentation the grain bulk is significantly reduced and everything is relatively thin, transferring to the still is usually not a problem. With the amount of hulls - which are huge by the way, they bloomed to the size of honeysuckle flowers - it just wanted to separate, the mass wanted to stay behind in the fermenter. I ended up shoveling at least 50 pounds of hulls and grain out of the fermenter, because there way no way they were coming over.

Didn't drain the still this morning, but I have a hunch that this will drain off very easily, if we can pump it out of the still without too much headache.

If you have to lauter your whiskey - I think adding oat would beat rice hulls, but you would absolutely need to use a judicious amount of beta glucanase.

Even with enzymes - it was relatively thick.

  • I've been grinding oats and rice finer and finer. My leftovers look more like paste now.

Seems the finer it is ground the more I can just rack off the top two thirds and wrestle the bottom third.

More and more I'm convinced the solution is ban marie, not dewatering or lautering.
