There were two killed there a couple years ago at the world championships when an updraught took them to 1000's of feet and they either froze or ran out of air.
Testing concept of alternate to compression fitting where the inserted temperature probe length is always adjustable and perfect sealing is realised. Works like a dream.
Super simple. The probe is 6mm diamter. Drilled 7mm hole into tube (column) and have welded a 1/4" BSP socket to tube (column). I sourced silicone tubing ID 6mm and OD same as socket internal and cut a suitable length and inserted into socket. I took a 1/4" BSP plug screw and drilled a 7mm diameter hole through.
Inserted probe for required depth, screwed in plug screw to compress silicone around probe.
The probe is rigidly held in position without any movement and at same time I have a perfect pressure and temperature seal
KISS. Sound good and all that is required as no real great pressure. The most annoying thing after that is the variability in probes over a temperature range. The best I got was 6 rtd underfloor heating probes that cost a few bucks a piece that varied by about 0.1 or 2 across our normal range. Does not seem to matter how much you spend and even have some 4 wire units and they all vary.
I have 7 temperature probes in my setup. In a quick test setup the other day with two of the probes, YES I had about 0.9 deg C variance which to me is unaceptable. As all the 4-20mA transmitters are programmable, I intend to get them all re-calibrated at one time. Of the seven, four are critical for accuracy.
I haven't pressure tested the compression seal yet but my estimation is that its good for up to at least +4 bar.
Latest arrival is my barometric absolute pressure transmitter which is essential for ethanol boling point determination. Will put it on the test rig later today
Agree @ClothermanDistilling. And you can get the compression fittings on flea bay china for bugger all. Mind you sometimes you have to adjust ( drill inside bore ) as they not right.

yes, I get eBay, but new-old-stock from liquidators mainly, I get the butt-weld, and also the 1/8" and 1/4" npt versions.. and have to drill them out. Luckily, I have a small micromark lathe that makes it a 30 second operation and one crappy drill bit has done 30 pieces each with a pair of 6' long spirals that would make great packing...
Thanks to @rossco for dropping in yesterday, always good to catch up and i love to listen to someone who really knows what they are talking about. He also dropped me in the 3 bottles of hot sauce above, so thank to SSB who is not a member hear as far as i recall for the sauce.
Tried the green one on a burger last night and loved it.

Damn thing didn’t last 5 minutes out of the oven.

Compression fitting work ok but if you use ss then you can’t readjust. Plastic ferrules are easier.
What you got there packing and a compression nut ? This concept or variant is the only way to go and I got them all over my still cause I can.
Damn lightning took out my computer and controller/ plc so have to go back to manual till I replace. Can see an insurance claim coming on.

I am very happy with compression fittings with nylon/teflon ferrules...

I have over 20 of them that seal with just finger tight, but keep a 9/16" wrench around just in case... they even seal around the smaller 6mm od super-thinwall sensor 'husks' found on... 10pcs Stainless Steel 304 Tube Husk for PT100 DS18B20 PT1000 Temperature Sensor @ eBay

Usually wrapped around a square or triangle die under some tension so that when it comes off, it uncoils to form the pretty geometry.
Either way, it has a nearly identical surface area, so theoretically it doesn’t make a difference.
I would think that droplets could more easily cling to the more asymmetrical pattern.
