I've learned in my explorations that it is tempting to be in a hurry, so that you can see more places (FOMO). However, it is often more rewarding to spend time in a place and allow the place to reveal itself to you. Quality over quantity.
I stood on Chanticleer point surrounded by clouds thinking to myself, "I bet the view from here is really something when it's clear." I waited a while protecting my camera from the cloud-drip. Just as I was about to leave I noticed the light getting brighter. Two minutes later the vista in the photos above revealed itself. I'm glad I waited.
That's the Vista House on Crown Point. When WWII ended, and tires and gasoline became available to civilians again, the first pleasure trip we took was up the gorge to see the Vista House for my first time. Kapea's photo blew away all the elapsed time between then and now. Thanks, guy.
If you're not into Thai food, there is a Vietnamese kaukau wagon that sets up next to that one that specializes in pho prepared with slow-cooked barbecued meats. It's called Pho Que Long Time!
The odd part is that I am into Thai food, although I don't get much chance to cook it anymore. That's why the chow mein stuck out. Of course, I've never had a green papaya salad, and I never make pad thai with chicken - usually with shrimp and fried tofu.
My favorite is a panang, and I used to have the kaffir lime tree to make it, until my wife pruned it back to the non-kaffir rootstock. Sob.
Unfortunely the lava is paving over some of the most beatiful land I have ever known. It’ll take a couple hundred years for it to grow back once the eruption stops. About 3000 acres so far.
Not to mention the loss of 45MW of geothermal generation capacity.
None of it should be a surprise to anybody though. The tropical rainforest and coastline on the rift of an erupting volcano may be a tempting place to live - just keep your car running...

@Kapea - You think the Eddie is going to run this year? I may be in Oahu and Maui for December.
Had the dumb luck of catching it twice while I was there. Third times a charm?
