I have been reasonably successful using an all electric boiler for stripping runs (sugar wash) and I have a gas stove top unit for things like plum brandy (large sediment).
It would be good to have a go at gin next particularly as there is a lot of good information here regarding gin.
As my electric boiler (50L) is more flexible I wondered if I could add the botanicals after macerating over night directly in the boiler as it is a bigger boiler than my stove top (25L). I like the idea of a heavy gin using less botanicals rather than a lighter version using vapour infusion.
It has easy to remove stainless steel elements so clean up after is no problem as long as stuff is not really burned on.
I just want an idea of the dangers of botanicals burning on the elements.

Bag em
Thanks grim, that makes sense, what about botanicals like Orris Root that are only available as a powder?
Is there a recommended size of bag thread or will a drawstring cotton muslin bag do the job?
You should look for a hopping bag the home brewers use, they generally come in super-fine mesh and powder generally won't fall right through. Considering you are adding direct to the boiler, expect powder to dissolve anyway.
Mountain Rose Herbs has orris root in pieces, but they are in the US, which may be wrong for you.

Haven't done gin yet in my 50 L but I had good results in my fruit brandy with pumping while heating where nothing is burning on
Thanks guys I may just try it both ways and report back

That's a bit of bad luck for me, my elements are mounted on 2" ferrules
Yes. Is there a timing for a 2"?
Problem is that the screen is sized so that it can cope with the foldback elements. That happens to put the screen at 2" od.

If the screen was 2", would it still not fit through the 2" ferrule? This would def be useful for me. I have a 50L milk can with the standard 2" ferrules
No it won't. The ID of what we call a 2" ferrule is about 1.75" ID. The screen is bigger than that.

@Smaug Shame. Maybe I have to add a 3" ferrule to the can then :)
