The heads won't go away. Tails will mellow out but heads are there pretty much forever. If you added the 5 gallons of head-less stuff, it should help calm it down. How long until your boys get married?

I will have 4x4x8 white oak available (any size can be made). Charred to spec with lab analysis . The lab sheet will have char level, moisture level and can be done repeatedly . The local company that does this for me use a state of the art Japanese charcoal ,flameless kiln. pm if anyone is interested. I can post pics of the product this afternoon.
Just noticed that Corsair seems to have some barrels in stock. $100 for the 10 gallon, $125 for the 15 gallon. They are Barrel Mill barrels used once. I bought a 15 back when they were out of the 10s and can really recommend them. Super nice people and a quality barrel.
I think the once used are primo for rum as some of the tannins have been removed. Still a lot of use left in them. I got one that had rye and it worked out great. Probably wouldn't get the smoke one unless using for whiskey
A quick question. We have a lot of wine barrels that regularly come up for sale. My thoughts would have been ..... send the barrels in for a proper internal clean and only then start using them. The barrels would have been either seconds or third fills at this stage.

Smaug. Always the diplomat.
You have plenty of time. Once you get it perfect, THEN you put it away to further age.

For whiskey or rum, I wouldn't use a wine barrel but that's just me. I know some places do but......
Second that - maybe to finish a whiskey or rum, but not the primary aging.
don't ruin thousands of dollars of good whiskey to save a hundred or two on a barrel...
