@CothermanDistilling it has been done, but you do need to factor in your boiler charge volume, potential bottoms volume, some sort of overflow arrangement etc.
It is an option and if you think about the boiling point of the column bottoms and the boiling point of the boiler (at the same moment in time) you can see why.
Won't work on a side mount column - and the thumper isn't the best option either, but it is an option.
If you have a twin split column ideally the bottoms from the second column would go to the TOP of the 1st column. Everything else is a compromise work around, because you can't do the ideal, and there are many different options.
