100 Litre Column Still

We have a new 100 litre StillDragon, 3 plate column still, we have done our first stripping run sugar wash but our NGS has come out with a horrible smell, we ran it twice and it hasn’t helped, why would it smell so much.

Many thanks
Billy

Hi Billy, Did you do a cleaning run prior to this run here?

Are you running a sourced NGS? Are you fermenting and just using the "NGS" moniker as a generic word for your distillate?

    Really do need more info.

  • What kind of sugar wash did you do? Was the sugar wash fully fermented out What kind of plates are you using?

3plates even run through twice is only 6plates which is not nearly enough to get a neutral spirit, specifically if you run it too fast.

What size 3 plate have you got? 4" 5" 6" etc?

  • Yep, all of the above.

Also, remember that a filtered, sourced GNS can still have low boiling point constituents that did not get removed by some iteration of filtering.

The distillation process can (especially with plates) concentrate flavor (both good and bad) profiles in the finished distillate.

Check your spent kettle charge. If your spent kettle charge is cloudy,,,,run it again.

Run it till your spent kettle charge is crystal clear.

If you are sourcing GNS and your spent kettle charge is cloudy,,,,,,well then your GNS ,,,,,needs to be run again. And is indeed not neutral.
