This may be a dumb question but here goes.
So if you add x amount of grain into x amount of water and you end up with x starting gravity that produces x amount of alcohol..... Now if you increase your water your starting gravity will drop however would I be correct in saying it will still produce the same amount of alcohol?
My thinking is you still have same amount of fermentables just diluted over a greater volume of water, there for same amount of alcohol fermented. Am i nuts or is this sound thinking.

Correct. Weaker solution may mean less recovered, but there will be the same total fermentables.

Your grain or sugar converts to alcohol regardless of water volume.
That said it’s not quite that simple in that lower or higher starting gravities can effect conversion rates as well as product quality.
So to answer your question... mostly yes but kinda no.
Too right. Increasing the starting gravity is notorious in causing problems if you push the SG to high.
