I have read that 304 stainless is OK up to 2 ppm of chlorine.
My water tank has mains water (city water in US) at 1 ppm.
Anything to worry about?
Or should I drain the tank and replace it with chlorine free water?
Comments
304 is fine with mains water, just keep our away from HCl.
Thanks.
Anyone using chlorine dioxide in their water tanks?
Apparently it is fine for both 304 and 316 stainless.
Not 304, most certainly not but again depends on concentration
Why would you bother with chlorine dioxide? Sanitizer? Water purification? Typically we're working to reduce and eliminate chlorine and chloramine, so I'm curious why you would want to introduce it anywhere?
PAA is far easier.
Your focus on chlorine had me thinking you're from a brewing background where sanitation is super critical. Sanitation is not high on my agenda, distillers typically welcome contamination from wild yeasts, depending on the resulting spirit. High level sanitation is not critical, remember, alcohol kills and distillation temps kill.
Not completely in agreement and here I refer to the fermentation and storage side of the process. Here you don't want unwanted bacteria and fungus growing and for this chlorine dioxide works well.
Not from a brewing background.
I do not want bacteria growing in my water tank.
Recirculate through UV or inject ozone.
We just recently fired up our new enlarged cooling water heat exchanger system, which includes a pretty husky (no numbers available right now) UV irradiator for koi ponds, and I'm detecting a bit of algae-like slickness building up in the reservoir. I'm starting to pitch heads into that reservoir, and maybe that'll help.

I’ve played with those aquarium UV lights in tanks before. Seems to work pretty good. Just leave it on all the time and get a big one.
Cheap as chips!!
For acetobacter I can understand, but algae?

Algae needs light to photosynthesize. Low/no light slimy buildup is usually bacteria or mold.
I'm more like I am now than I was before.
Apparently chlorine dioxide is OK in 304 stainless up to 100ppm:
Corrosivity of Chlorine Dioxide Used as Sanitizer in Ultrafiltration Systems @ ScienceDirect
I have asked the supplier of Aqua Sol how many PPM in the recommended dose and they said:
Aqua Sol gives 3 ppm of chlorine dioxide when used as directed.
Good insight. Thanks guy.

My water guy yelled at me for having clear RO tubing. My coolant holding tank is clear too, headache.
The title is chlorine and stainless contenders. Since all the water here is for a condenser, I treated mine as if were a pool. Dosed with fungal and anti bacterial. Worked a treat and nothing ever grew in my IBCs. I don't use that system anymore, simply in and out with potable water. Not the most environmentally sound practice but it's what I have to work with in my current site.
wondering about dropping a small 1" bromine tablet like they use in hot tub floaters into the storage tank?
