Had a run act a little different and need some advice.
- Spirit run on 20 gals of 40%
- 6 plates
- Run was solid 180 proof the whole time making collections
- Then at the end it went from 180 to 150 proof in about 16 oz collected
- I did a sniff and diluted a sample to taste, I was expecting dog but it was still OK. I stopped the run hoping tails were close. The norn is its nasty when the proof falls out quick.
Where tails coming quick or should i kept it running?
Comments
I would read the DASH operation manual, page 43
And also kiwi's guide to cuts
I would have up'd the power and increased reflux to hold tails back from coming through too early.
I might be mistaken but are you talking about white dog ???
Just was confused with this run . Usually when the proof starts dropping quick it is wet dog but the spirit was still ok. Probly would of gone south soon . I didnt run it long enough to fog up my sight glasses .
Neutral spirit run also .
Maybe you did not go deep enough on the stripping runs.
Good point . When stripping i stop after the sight of tails . I should run deeper
it is exactly what I have done, FML!
I run down to about 10% when stripping, no cuts. The purpose is just to reduce volume. do cuts on the spirit run.
Good info
Thanks guys!!!!!
@crozdog. I thought the "normal" thing is to cut your tails at 20%. The last few whiskey runs I have done I cut at 20% and then there are almost no tails on the spirit run, but not as much volume as well. Any comments from the peanut gallery?
Oh God yes, cut at 20%!
The volumetric difference between 20% and 10% is so small versus the cost in power, time and labour, it's crazy IMHO to do it.
It's called operational losses and costs you bugger all.
