Spiced Rum?

With all of this latest chatter about Siesta Key's spiced rum, I have become curious. My only experience with spiced rums has been with Captain Morgan's (in high school, puke followed) and some Black Coral that @Smaug let me taste which was very good. I've done some searching around but do any of you guys make it and if so, any tips or recipes?

This here is from Mash Rookie's daughter:

Hi guys here is my recipe for spiced rum concentrated essence.

In a saucepan heat to a boil stirring frequently:

    2 cups water
1/2 cup brown sugar or molasses
    1/2 stick cinnamon
2 or 3 one inch pieces of orange peel
1 vanilla bean or 2 tsp of pure vanilla extract
    1 tsp almond extract (optional)
    Pinch of allspice
    Pinch of ground cloves

Boil until reduced by about half, then filter with metal strainer for the big chunks and coffee filter for the small particles, boil again to reduce further to make concentrate- then add to rum! Refrigerate any unused essence.

I personally prefer to substitute the cinnamon with roasted orange peel. I just don't like cinnamon in my rum.
