Used bourbon barrel,,,,, used for aging beer.
Evidently the barrel has been empty long enough to warrant bacteria concern about charging with another round of beer.
How will a good soak in 70% rum affect the usability of another beer batch?

Bourbon is often added to a porter, so would suggest that. But rum may be good in some styles too.

Treat yourself to some innis and gunn rum aged ale. Aged 77 days in rum barrels. It's in my top 3 most fav beers.
Sodium percarbonate

I'm thinking a scotch ale would compliment well with rum residuals.
How was the barrel stored after you racked the beer out of it? Did you rince it properly and let it to dry?
70 % ethanol is an efficient sanitizer. I would think that a soak in 70% ABV would be sufficient to render your barrel suitable for aging a new batch of beer if it was stored in resonable conditions.
There is always the concern that barteria could be hiding in a corner were it would not be in contact with the rum but would become in contact with the beer but I would see this as unlikely.
Not my barrel. Just asking for a friend that has some used barrels for sale.

Forgive my noobness but wouldn't SP soak in making the sweet sweet taste of the golden beverage we all enjoy so much, taste like toothpaste? Or should I be +1 in sodium percarbonate as well?
I wouldn't be using it.

Fire!
rinse well with fresh water to start. Do you have a steam generator? if so make up a steam wand...
What about one of the no rinse sanitisers? iodophor or starsan come to mind
Wineries burn sulphur blocks to sterilise barrels. That might be worth a try
What about setting up your still with just water in it and running steam in to it for say half a day that would have to do something plus it would ack as a good way to make sure the barrel was still water tight.

Steam should work well. Good suggestion.

Don't put heads in and fire it up. That gets really scary really fast,
Why do I know you know ?:)

Was it like when I was pissed, and distilling at the same time, sprung a leak in the copper liberg and thought it was a good idea to solder it shut with a blow torch? (still was running)

One thing I should add to this is if you do use steam I would set my wooden keg up and try not to move it to much steam will soften the timber realy quick and by moving it to much you might end up making the rings and joints come lose. My grandfather use steam to sofen the timber on his boats he use to build it works realy well.

Would steam warp the oak?
Given the way wooden barrels are made I dont think so but I would not recommend moving the barrel while it was still hot from steam. I think you would have a small chance of causeing a leak say if you pushed it over and let it hitthe ground. How ever if the barrel had some seam leaks it would probly help seal em up.

I'd say that as you wouldn't be subjecting the barrel to the steam for a extended period, & considering the thickness of the staves, there would be little chance of the timber distorting.
Yes when fishermen use steam to warp timbers they do it for a couple of days with pressure on the timber the whole time.

Maybe it was just my setup but it resulted in a series of cascading internal explosions continued until the heads were gone. Like a scram jet sorta. The end result worked out awesome though.
that might be the funniest thin I'll read all week.. Lol
Should have seen three generations of pot stillers proving that discretion is the better part of valor. Seriously didn't want to be any where near the bloody thing at the time.
lol, how much heads did you put in?
Just filled it till it came out the hole where the tap goes. Maybe only a few hundred ml. Once the keg heats, each explosion creates a vacuum and draws in oxygen, the barrel is hot and there are fumes. Don't recon you need much. Oh and the kegs gunna want to be strong. Mine is a 20litre properly made keg, don't want any weak rings.
You're asking how much alcohol to put in it?
Wait, seriously...if you do this, think video...for us.
DAD... not yours.. ah, hell... I don't know...
rossco I got to ask what are you talking about. Steaming a wooden keg so it can be sanitized or making a bome.???
