Keg Boiler Rust - Help/Opinions

Hi folks,

I've had a new electric keg boiler made.

The welder that made it for me didn't pickle the inside of the welds, he was concerned about the chemicals in the pickling paste.

However the inside of the welds are very rusty.

Would you, just work away as is or get them cleaned up and do a vinegar and maybe sacrificial alcohol run?

Thanks guys

Get another qualified welder. He needs to both pickle and passivate the weld. Did he at least purge the welding / vessel. I have seen so many bad weld conditions.

  • Bit of a technophobe, so can't figure out how to add pic's. No where near as dirty as those pic's though. I'll bring it back, get it pickled and passivated and shine on I guess!

  • FYI - Boiling wash in the kettle can/will passivate stainless.

It's not ideal, or fast, but it works. You can also just boil a high concentration of citric acid. Or, any decent brewery/CIP acid cleaner is strong enough to do the trick.

Thanks @grim, after some more research, I cleaned the area by hand and used some 12% peracetic acid. All looking good now
