Advice on Redistilling NGS

  • Plate count calculator would be pretty problematic to get an accurate sum because RR will impact final result with the lesser plate counts if you see my meaning....

  • you can buy 2 products from Wilwar, both are by products of our sugar manufacturing Industry a 95/NC and a 95 BG both 95% ABV as it doesn't come any Stronger both are priced between $5 and $6 a litre in 1,000 litre IBC's Delivery included to you Australia wide providing you have a movement permission from the ATO. Manildra also have 2 products but both of theirs are made from grain and distilled 5 times before being sold to you. They are the biggest Ethanol manufacturers in South east Asia and sell world wide. One is ENA 95 and the other is called whiskey style ENA 95 for making whiskey particularly and they are slightly cheaper but only 50 cents or so a litre. They are both cheaper than making your own wash and distilling it and are very clean and certified Organic. You will loose a bit in the redistilling of them as you know to qualify for the excise remission scheme you have to contribute 70% of the work in manufacturing the end product. Depending on the still you use it will return to you after being cut with RO water to 40% and redistilled it comes back at 90% to 92% ABV. You don't have to account for or pay for the difference in what you bought at 95% ABV and what it returned to you at say 91% ABV providing its compatible with Industry Standards which they say is approx 10%. There are no heads or tails to dispose of and it is much simpler, cleaner and complies with Licensing and ATO laws. I use both companies products and they are great and even cleaner or more neutral if you recut them again to 40% and double distil them or even triple distil them for a super premium Vodka. I use a StillDragon Dash2 6 Plate 380 litre unit.

  • @Russel, after distillation what does your spent kettle charge look like? Is it milky/opaque. Or clear/clean like a finished distillate?

    It is very clean and clear no change to the appearance from what it started as, and comes back at between 90% to 92% and if you like you can cut it back to 40 to 45% again and distill it again. Each time it comes out smoother and very drinkable. The left over after the cook is about 1.5 % and if you were making a wash up its good to use it for that as it started out as R/O water anyway so its ok and not wasted. I filter everything a couple of times before bottling and its crystal clear, a very good product. Wilmar has introduced a fully organic product now same strength at 95% but its nearly twice the price but I haven't tried it yet but after distilling the 95/NC 3 times there isn't much better on the market and I have tried a few of my mates who drink Vodka only with soda and a squeeze of fresh lime and they cant pick the difference even the ones who just have it with ice.

  • @russell. Great write up mate. Thanks very much. I was thinking of making some vodka with the NGS that I can get, which in Argentina used to cost US$0.6 a litre but its gone up to US$1.2. Although I like adding in 5% hearts from a white whiskey to get a flavored vodka, either wheat or Rye. If its rye I add 10%. I got a taste for vodka living in the mountains of Armenia in winter when its minus 45. Thats when vodka really makes a lot of sense.
