Need some Advice on Sweetfeed Alternative

edited March 2016 in General

Sweetfeed is starting to be worrisome to find around here, so I was looking at alternatives at the feed store and came across a product made locally called "MO Bucks" deer feed.

Basically it is ground rice with whole corn and molasses. I grabbed a couple of 40 lb sacks, took 2-3 cups with a pound of sugar, gallon of water and let it ferment out. Then I tasted it.. huuummmm.. I think its a keeper.

The corn is whole corn, so I ground the corn up. Here are my concerns:

  1. Do I need to mash the corn?
  2. And the ground rice then ferment, or just throw it in a bucket?
  3. If I use sugar instead of the sugars in the corn, will I get the full flavor?

  • I always thought sweet feed was just for flavouring anyway. If you actually want sugars from the corn or rice you need to mash regardless. You should get the flavour either way
